Scot is held after drugs bust - Herald Scotland | News | Crime & Courts

Scot is held after drugs bust - Herald Scotland | News | Crime & Courts: "Scottish expat spent Christmas behind bars for his alleged part in a suspected drugs gang in a Spanish holiday resort.

James Lindsay, 51, has been held since last week after he was picked up during a major police operation near Alicante on the Costa Blanca.

Lindsay was arrested with two other British citizens, 64-year-old David Tricks, from Luton, and John Hugoes, 40, whose hometown is unknown.

Spanish drugs officers found 600kg of hashish, worth an estimated £1.8m, at a house shared by the three men in Catral, near Alicante.

Also recovered during the operation were three imitation firearms and €25,000 (£21,250) in cash. Six luxury cars, computers, field-glasses and 30 mobile phones were also seized, police said.

Reports in the Spanish press said one of the men was later re-arrested after trying to flee from a hospital where he was treated for a stroke apparently suffered during the initial operation.

The three men are being questioned as part of a probe into a long-running drugs operation on the Spanish holiday coast.

A spat between rival gangs recently saw a 1.2-tonne shipment of hashish stolen at gun point as it was unloaded from boats at a remote beach, according to local reports."

Don't indict former President George W. Bush's From Florida to Spain, intrigue to stop a judge - Guantánamo - MiamiHerald.com

Decision PointsFrom Florida to Spain, intrigue to stop a judge - Guantánamo - MiamiHerald.com: "Don't indict former President George W. Bush's legal brain trust for alleged torture in the treatment of war on terror detainees, warned Mel Martinez on one of his frequent trips to Madrid. Doing so would chill U.S.-Spanish relations.

Rather than a resolution, though, a senior Spanish diplomat gave the former GOP chairman and housing secretary a lesson in Spain's separation of powers. ``The independence of the judiciary and the process must be respected,'' then-acting Foreign Minister Angel Lossada replied on April 15, 2009. Then for emphasis, ``Lossada reiterated to Martinez that the executive branch of government could not close any judicial investigation and urged that this case not affect the overall relationship.''

The case is still open, on the desk of a Spanish magistrate, awaiting a reply from the Obama administration on whether it will pursue a probe of its own.

But the episode, revealed in a raft of WikiLeaks cables, was part of a secret concerted U.S. effort to stop a crusading Spanish judge from investigating a torture complaint against former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and five other senior Bush lawyers."

Police caught up with O'Brien at the Trafalgar Bar, in Calahonda, a coastal town between Marbella and Fuengirola.

One of the UK's most wanted fugitives has been arrested in Spain.
Dennis O'Brien, from Liverpool, is suspected of leading a gang which plotted to import £166 million of cocaine into the UK from Peru.
The 62-year-old was found at a Costa del Sol bar on Saturday after a joint operation by the British Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and Spanish police.
He is one of the fugitives featured in Operation Captura - Crimestoppers' campaign to trace suspected British criminals who are on the run in Spain.
Police caught up with O'Brien at the Trafalgar Bar, in Calahonda, a coastal town between Marbella and Fuengirola.
A spokesman said: "Dennis Patrick O'Brien was arrested on Saturday in Calahonda in the Costa del Sol.
"The arrest was part of an ongoing operation by the Spanish National Police and the UK's Serious Organised Crime Agency targeting bars in the region which are known to be regular haunts of criminals."
O'Brien fled the country in 2005 before he could be put on trial for his alleged role in a conspiracy to supply 1.6 tonnes of cocaine.
His son James Kelly, from Garston, Liverpool, was jailed at Liverpool Crown Court for 19 years in March 2007 for his part in the same trafficking plot.
The investigation led police from Peru to England, via Rotterdam, Madrid and Amsterdam, and even saw gang members tailed to Hong Kong and Dubai.DISCLAIMER:Text may be subject to copyright. This blog does not claim copyright to any such text. Copyright remains with the original copyright holder.

Beheaded people for a Mexican drug cartel while under the influence of narcotics.

Drug Lords: The Rise and Fall of the Cali Cartelteenager captured international headlines this month after admitting that he beheaded people for a Mexican drug cartel while under the influence of narcotics. Fourteen years ago, that same boy began his life in San Diego with cocaine in his system.Edgar Jimenez Lugo’s arrest and confession show what can happen when children — especially orphans or those from unstable families — become involved in the drug underworld. It’s a problem authorities on both sides of the border are fighting.

More than 32,000 people have died in Mexico since President Felipe Calderón launched an unprecedented war on that nation’s drug traffickers and organized crime in 2006.

Still, many Mexicans were stunned by the specter of child recruits being used as hitmen for cartels, said Ursula Oswald, an analyst of social vulnerabilities at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Cuernavaca.

“Everybody suspected but wasn’t sure this existed, until you have this case,” Oswald said.

Edgar’s story started in 1996 in San Diego, where his birth wasn’t greeted with the typical family fanfare. His parents were leading a tumultuous life of drug addiction, alcoholism and domestic violence.

In the months before he was born, his father, David Antonio Jimenez Solis, was jailed for spousal abuse. He later acknowledged to a probation officer that he snorted cocaine daily, smoked marijuana and drank a six-pack of beer each day.

Edgar’s mother, Yolanda Jimenez Lugo, told her probation officer that she suffered from depression and used cocaine to boost her spirits and energy.

When Edgar was born and tested positive for cocaine in the hospital, child welfare workers immediately took him from his mother, along with five of his siblings, and put them in foster care.

“Edgar hardly knew his mother,” a relative of Yolanda’s recalled last week.

By the time Edgar was 18 months old, his mother was arrested at a drug house in southeastern San Diego for possession of rock cocaine. The next month, Edgar and his siblings were sent to live with their paternal grandmother, Carmen Solis Gil, in Cuernavaca, Mexico, a tourism destination about 40 miles south of Mexico City.

She died about six years ago — around the time that Edgar was getting into fights in the second grade, eventually being expelled after he punched a girl.

“When Doña Carmen was alive, those kids didn’t get in trouble,” Yolanda’s relative said. “Everything started coming apart when she died.”

The details about Edgar and his family come from official documents and interviews in San Diego and Mexico with relatives, friends, neighbors and authorities.

But how he became part of a gang associated with the splintered Beltran Leyva cartel remains unclear.

What is known is that the Mexican army arrested Edgar on Dec. 2 at the airport near Cuernavaca. The military then twice paraded him before a throng of news media, first at the airport and then the next day in Mexico City.

His place in the spotlight followed the posting of a YouTube video last month showing teens — including one called “El Ponchis,” Edgar’s nickname — boasting about decapitating cartel enemies. The footage created a buzz throughout Mexico and led to a military hunt for the youthful hitmen.DISCLAIMER:Text may be subject to copyright. This blog does not claim copyright to any such text. A story of sunken treasure, Nazi art thieves and secret diplomatic cables would make a pretty good movie,

Hitler's Museum: The Secret History of Art Theft During World War IIWikiLeaks reveals a secret deal against Tampa's Odyssey Marine Exploration: "A story of sunken treasure, Nazi art thieves and secret diplomatic cables would make a pretty good movie, but it's a true story playing out right here in Tampa. And like so much in the news lately it also involves WikiLeaks.
In 2007, Tampa based Odyssey Marine Exploration announced an historic discovery - a half billion dollars worth of gold and silver coins on the floor of the North Atlantic. The treasure was brought to the U.S., but Spain immediately claimed ownership sparking a legal battle.
Enter WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange whose massive release of classified documents revealed a secret deal between an American ambassador and Spanish officials.
The Guardian online found a diplomatic cable in which the American suggested he might be able to help Spain repatriate their coins if they would return a rare painting claimed by an American couple in San Diego."

WikiLeaks Disclosures Prompt Defense Department Ban on USB Drives - Security - News & Reviews - eWeek.com

HP v100w 8 GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive P-FD8GBHP100-EFWikiLeaks Disclosures Prompt Defense Department Ban on USB Drives - Security - News & Reviews - eWeek.com: "The Pentagon's new restrictions on removable media and file transfers may impact how United States troops abroad communicate with family and friends back home, according to a privacy and computer security expert.
The new rules, outlined by the U.S. Department of Defense in a memo shortly after WikiLeaks started posting 250,000 cables from U.S. embassies and diplomats, ban military service personnel from using any removable media on any classified machines. The 'crackdown' on removable media will likely include 'rewritable CD drives, USB flash drives and multimedia storage like SD cards,' said Darren Hayes, Computer Information Systems Program Chair at New York's Pace University, to eWEEK.
Maj. Gen. Richard Webber, commander of Air Force Network Operations, issued a 'Cyber Control Order' on Dec. 3, outlining the new rules and directing all personnel to 'immediately cease use of removable media on all systems, servers and stand-alone machines residing on SIPRNet,' according to a CNN report.
Similar directives have been issued to other military branches, the report said."

Wikileaks' Julian Assange: The most dangerous man in the world? - Telegraph

Time Magazine, December 13, 2010-WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange-Do You Want To Know a Secret?Wikileaks' Julian Assange: The most dangerous man in the world? - Telegraph: "WikiLeaks remains something of a mystery. Who runs it? How does it work? And what will it do next?
It is Assange whose face adorns the WikiLeaks home page. Groomed and suited, he looks like an American news anchor. Strange is the word often used to describe him; arrogant, too. But bright, also.
“I am the heart and soul of this organisation, its founder, philosopher, original coder, organiser, financier and all the rest,” he once said to a critic. “If you have a problem with me, p--- off.”
Born in Queensland, Australia in 1971, Assange has always been a nomad. His mother, herself a rebel, moved him 37 times before the age of 14. Little is known about his father. Home-schooled, he developed an early obsession with computers and, as the web developed, he became a hacker, earning a criminal record at the age of 20 for breaking into the system of a Canadian telecoms company. The break up of his marriage and the ensuing battle for access to his child inspired in him a lasting mistrust of state power. Wikileaks, an internet repository for leaked information, born in 2007, was the result."

four Spanish civil guards landed on Gibraltar

Bardasano On Guard Vintage Spanish Civil War Military Propaganda Poster"It is a year since the four Spanish civil guards landed on Gibraltar. Spanish reports yesterday said that no action had been taken by the Spanish authorities against them.

It will be recalled that the Spanish interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba late on that night telephoned the Chief Minister Peter Caruana and offered his apologies for the 'incorrect action' taken by the Spanish Guardia Civil officers, who had earlier been detained by Gibraltar police for entering Gibraltar waters and landing in the port area, in pursuit of a Spanish fast launch with two men onboard.

Interior ministry said then that Caruana had accepted the apologies and that they hoped the matter would be resolved shortly.

Shortly thereafter, the Gibraltar police said the four Guardia Civil officers had been released."

Christopher Kinahan and his two sons, Christy Junior and Daniel walked out of the Albolote Prison in Granada on Friday

The alleged drug trafficker known as the ‘Irish Godfather’, Christopher Kinahan, has been granted bail by the judge, María del Carmen Gutiérrez Henares, in Court Number 3 in Estepona. She also authorised the release from prison for his two sons, Christy Junior and Daniel, with bail set at 60,000 € for each one of the three.
Reports indicate that they all left the Albolote prison in Granada on Friday

They have been held on remand since May when the police arrested them as part of an operation, codenamed Shovel, which extended across five countries.

Kinahan has been ordered to present himself to the court every Monday as part of the bail conditions, and has had his passport withdrawn. He is accused of heading a grand network of organised crime, which distributed drugs across Europe and offered money laundering services to other drug dealers.

Intelligence services from five countries took part in the Shovel operation, which saw some 30 arrests in Spain, Ireland and the UK. Most of the arrests were in Marbella, Estepona and Fuengirola. 60 properties worth 150 million € were impounded and the ownership of some 50 others in Brazil is being investigated.

Kinahan is also linked to the February 2008 shooting of a 28 year old in an Estepona urbanisation.

Police consider him to be highly intelligent and say that is why he has managed to appear distant from the criminal activities, although he has been sentenced in Ireland for both drug trafficking and financial crimes. Irish police say he spent his time in jail perfecting his Dutch and Spanish languages.
